Don't submit before you check the journal
Every removal in this update happened without prior warning. Run any Scopus-indexed journal through the AI Journal Risk Analyzer and see its risk score in under five minutes — before you send the manuscript, not after.
Check your journal free →What delisting means for your manuscript
The consequences are administrative, not academic — which is exactly why they are so hard to argue with:
- A paper submitted or accepted before the removal date may not be credited in degree, tenure or certification requirements.
- Publication in a delisted journal can become grounds for rejection at a dissertation defence.
- Grants and academic positions tied to Scopus-indexed output are affected the same way.
- Your article does not disappear from Scopus if it was indexed before the cut-off date — but articles published after it never enter the database at all.
That last point is where most authors lose money and a year of their time. The journal website stays online, the acceptance letter looks the same, the APC is charged as usual. Only the indexation is gone.
How to check a journal before submission
The reputation a journal had in 2022 tells you nothing about its status today. A workable pre-submission routine looks like this:
- Confirm the title is currently active in Scopus — check the source page directly, not a screenshot on the journal website.
- Look at output volume over the last two years. A sharp spike is the single most reliable warning sign.
- Compare the promised review timeline with the field norm. Two weeks in the humanities is not efficiency.
- Check who is recruiting authors on the journal's behalf. Intermediaries selling guaranteed acceptance are a policy problem waiting to be documented.
- Check the discontinued titles list every quarter, or let a tool do it.
Arxivia was built for this part of the job. The AI Journal Risk Analyzer scores a journal against the signals that precede delisting, and the AI Journal Matcher finds verified alternatives that actually fit your manuscript — in minutes, not weeks.
Conclusion
Twenty-five journals delisted from Scopus in two months, thirteen of them gone for good. The names on the list include four of the largest publishers in academic publishing, which removes the last comfortable assumption researchers tend to rely on: that a big imprint means a safe submission.
Checking a journal before you submit is not excessive caution. In 2026 it is the minimum standard for anyone who cannot afford to lose a publication — and it takes minutes.
Next update: journals removed from Scopus in June 2026 — 12 more titles from eight countries.
